Pretty Pictures!.......Yea!

After a lot of difficult conversations with people a lot smarter than me I have decided to take my thesis in a new direction. My new thesis will be titled "Pretty Pictures! Yea!". What kind of animal doesn't love pretty pictures??!?!........Yea!
Thanks a lot to Clay for sharing some 3D code that worked wonderfully.

Low Level All Stars...
HTML is unable to convey how much I enjoyed the Low Level All Stars performance at Deitch last night (curated by Cory Arcangel). It was the best show I have ever seen in my life. It was so good I wanted to cut off my ears so that new sounds would not push it out of my memory. At one point I witnessed the coolest thing I had ever seen... a duo from Texas called Treewave put a mic on an old school dot matrix printer. They had figured out what sounds certain characters made when printed and turned the printer into an instrument that played music. This lasted as the coolest thing I had ever seen in my life for about 20 minutes until Bodenstaendig 2000 took the stage. They are the German duo drx and bern. I don't know how to explain what they did that was so great, all I know is that it made me want to hug people when they were done. I have seen the pinnacle of new media performance and it is Bodenstaendig 2000. In summery, Low Level All = best show of all time.

Satanic Images....
I had an idea today for a project that could be funny where you do a google images search for 'DSC00666.JPG' and see the 666th photo people took on their digital cameras. This is a total rip of both a project I'd seen before that searches for the first photo ('DSC00001.JPG'), and a Cory Arcangel project that performs .mp3 compression to an Ozzy song 666 times. That being said, I think something funny could be done with the images found by clicking the link below:
SATANIC IMAGES!.
(or better yet, here in the upper left corner is the 666th google return for the search 'DSC00666.JPG').

Computer Arts...

I did an article for the Computer Arts projects series. It is in the Get Creative With Typography issue which came out around xmas. I think by this point it is out of most stores so I posted a .pdf scan of it here. I published the source code files in the accompanying CDR in trying to remain true to the spirit of open source which may or may not have lead to the following ad (see post below). Thanks to Bao for the taking the photo!

biting...

I am not claiming that I am the first person to make images out of text, but I'm still going to cry foul on this one. Rosetta Stone language learning software has rendered an airplane out of the word avion. Very creative.
In other biting news, typedrawing completely bit my Typographic Illustration project. The difference is they present the tool to the user where I chose not to. I actually apreciate the typedrawing site because building it out as a tool was something I was not interested in doing myself. That being said, they could have dropped a red head an email.

Comments...
I just figured out that you have to approve comments before they show up. So in celebration of the blogs first comments I've decided to link people up. The two recipients of my linkage (which is sure to bring one, possibly two extra hits) are the amazing digital artists and activists:

American Folk Art Museum...

Ok, I'm not going to lie, there are a lot of quilts in the Folk Art Museum. But that being said there is a lot of unpretentious and raw art to be found here. Before I got busted for taking photos I got these of a piece called "Baby Blanket" (made out of condoms), and an illustration by Henry Darger. Skip the lines and attitude at the MoMA and round the corner to the Folk Art Museum. Stand by the door for 5 minutes and ask people who are leaving for their stickers and you can get in for free.

Fuck You and Your H2....

This is Michele and I taking part in one of my favorite database driven sites Fuck You and Your H2. The idea is simple, give HUMMERs the finger and take a photo. It's a great site not only because of the entertaining photos online, but also because it encourages people to act on their anger in a funny and public way. There is nothing rugged and cool about getting the middle finger.

I am a toy....

Two reasons why am I a total toy:
1.) Just when I am feeling so proud of how nice my silver tag looks glimmering in the winter sun someone totally pisses blue all over me.
2.) I can't even read what it says (siek?!).
I was actually happy to find this because I think it is a good example of what someone knowledgeable in the medium of writing looks like versus someone just learning. Thanks for the lesson whatever your name is.

Digital Disobedients....
I was recently contacted to contribute work to Digital Disobedients. I hadn't heard of their work before, but the site is an amazing collection of politically motivated new media projects. The Nerds Fight Back and War Games sections are worth spending time with.

Ask E.T.
I've been on Edward Tufte's site before, but I never noticed the Ask E.T. section until I found it posted on netdiver.net (a great design and new media links site). People log onto the site and Tufte gives quite in depth answers to questions. Definitely worth a read if you are Tufte fan.

mandatory Gates entry....

So if you live in New York City and you have a blog it is mandatory that you make an entry about the Gates...... this is mine. For the most part I really enjoyed the experience of walking around the park, and it was amazing to see so many people spending their weekend viewing art. If I had any criticism it would only be that they did not match the river metaphor I had envisioned, but rather felt sprinkled everywhere. There are so many paths in the park that when you cover them all direction and movement become diluted. The view from the top of the Met is not worth trip even if there are short lines as it is not elevated enough to obtain the view you really want. Also, I couldn't find one example of graffiti on ANY of the gates.... what a let down. Graffiti artists are often very respectful of other public art projects, but COME ON! This is a great opportunity! There is a great street art project to be had with the gates, don't let Christo have all the fun! If anyone has any photos of "public art" being added to the "public art" please post them in the comments. You don't need hundreds of thousands of dollars and permission to make great art in the city.... but it certainly helps. Viva Christo!

Graffiti Chat Room....
This is currently my favorite thing on the internet:
http://www.onesixtytwo.com/graffboard.html
It's a chat room for graffiti writers with a community drawing area combine with standard IM functionality. It's worth it just to log on and watch people communicate this way. I've only been on for 10 minutes and seen people with some real skill. Make sure to give yourself a name as soon as you enter the site as the default setting is 'TOY'. Much respect to LA crew onesixtytwo.

community graffiti...

I check up on some fi5e pieces from time to time, and today I found something totally new. One of the graffiti artists whose tag was used for the creation of the 'A' taxonomy actually found is character and tagged over it! The "NEA" tag (or "REA"? I'm embarrassed to say I'm not sure) was applied on top of the poster. It is written at 90 degrees to the print but you can see the similarity in the 'A', as well as the small torn reproduction in the bottom right corner. The response to this project has been the most rewarding of anything I've done in the streets so far, and I'm looking forward to putting a lot of time into this after graduation.

dooball....

Today I fell in love with dooball. I found this tag in my classroom today which I really enjoyed for the following reasons:
1. It stood out drastically from the otherwise drab textures of white drywall, formica, and linoleum.
2. It was written on the bottom of the desk (I'm picturing it being written during a particularly boring lecture).
3. It was written in reverse as if visually traced from above.

the Letter L....

HELL has been really active lately and has hit just about every floor in the stairs at the Parsons building. His/her tag seems influenced by NYC legend LEE's tag (shown below from a scan out of Aerosol Kingdom). It also reminds of laverne and shirley, but what are you going to do.

*update, shouts to woostercollective for posting this as well.

Pudding tag....

Location, location, location. I found this cinnamon tag in the pudding of the salad bar at the deli on University and 13th st. It is so nerdy that it has made the cross over into hard core. I love it.

A classmate of mine, Theo, hooked me to the UK Grime artist Dizzee Rascal. This is some of the craziest drum machine work I've heard in a while. You can download a couple of his albums below (links won't be active permanently):

hello world....
After being forced to run a blog as a course requirement I've come to realize that I am addicted to it. It is out of respect to this addiction (and the rest of my classmates who are probably getting quite sick of me posting any little thing that grabs my attention) that I say good-bye to the stream, and hello to my own blog. So long stream, I will remember you fondly.
