Explicit Content Only....

I've been really excited about this idea I had to remove everything from N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton album except for the curse words. It's like a reverse censored version of the album I'm calling "Explicit Content Only". I want to do the entire album but below is the title track as an example of what it would sound like. I love this idea but feel like it must have been done before. If so please leave a comment and let me know so that I can save a lot of wasted audio editing time. If it has not been done than stay tuned to the ni9e.com site for the complete album in the next few weeks.
Full version in real time (4 min 19 secs)
straight_outta_compton.mp3
Areas of silence edited out (19.4 secs):
straight_outta_compton_EDITED.mp3
My findings for "Straight Outta Compton" show a 7.4% rate of explicit content.

Great idea. What I would keep in mind is that the final version, whatever it is, should be entertaining to listen too. I think the version that will work best is if you can remix all the curse words into a new song. If you can find to separate the voice and beat, I would play the curse words for several seconds, then go into the beat, and switch back and forth from them.
Some other options:
Play the curse words to another song, like classical or country music.
Play off the whole DJ Dangermouse Grey Album project and remix to a Beatles song.
Make it into a academic study. Graph the curse words per minute on a chart. Play a curse-heavy clip of the song, and mark each curse word with a sound, or add audio commentary. (At 1:42, we have the first "pussy-fuck-fuck" combination. The internal onomatopedia harkens the listener back to a time where...)
I could probably help out with the last one.

I like the idea but I think it would be better executed using an instrumental of the song.
Instead of all the empty space, the beat would play and every once and a while you'd hear "bitch!" or "muthafucka!" and it would be a truly strange experience.

Now *that's* what I call music! The instrumental+swearing sounds like an excellent idea, but I can't imagine there ever was an instrumental version of this recorded...

OH GOD I LOVE THIS
Posted by: lepos at April 14, 2005 06:55 PM
There was an instrumental version but it's vinyl only...
Posted by: E_B_A at April 14, 2005 07:27 PM
chase it down!!!! get that instrumental and do it, THAT would be fucking ace.
Posted by: Shane at April 14, 2005 08:45 PM
I like the long version, with all the silence. It's not really a song, so it shouldn't be judged as one. Great work. If you produced a version using an instrumental, that would rock out as well.
Mat Hall:
There's always an instrumental recorded. It's just a matter of how hard it is to find.

I dig it, the odd pauses, broken up with loud flashes of "muthahfuckah", somehting Andy Warhol might have done... if he got into hiphop. Good show old man!

motherfucker fuck ass pussy ass pussy bitch shit motherfucker motherfucker motherfucker bitch
haha, greatest idea ever!

This is like the mp3 that had every utterance of "fuck" (or variation thereof) from Scarface in it. Sounds good...

On a related topic there's a track called "In Spanish" by Ruben Garcia which is the old "Meaning of Fuck" skit by George Carlin over a hip-hop groove. Very nice song.

This is too good for you not to get a threatening letter of some sort from Aftermath or the RIAA or God knows who for stealing their content.

I'm going to release the full album on my site in a couple of weeks and if I don't get a cease and desist I will be disapointed. Thanks for all the feedback and ideas, this is great.

Very very cool! I am a huge fan of old school rap and don't really like the new stuff. I can rap this whole song from memory and it was fun to try and stay on beat with the silent version.
I can beleive I didn't think of this!

My man DJ Richie Rich has a copy... I'll ask him next time I see him.
Posted by: E_B_A at April 15, 2005 01:30 PM
I downloaded the instrumental version and plugged in the "full swear" version. The instrumental doesn't line up perfectly with the actual song, so it took some fiddling to get it to sync. The result isn't really that interesting. I would agree that maybe cutting up the swear words into the song in a more creative fashion might turn into something more listenable.

How funny would a video explicit-only edit of Deadwood be?

Nobody mentioned the beautiful Nina Gordon acoustic version, or Big Bad Baz's christmas version.

My dad likes to comment on the failing standards of modern music (eg. he thinks it's nothing but the word motherfucker repeated to a beat) - I might play him this to confirm his worst fears :)
Posted by: Justin at April 16, 2005 08:58 AM
Nice. It's kind of weird listening to a moment of silence, then the word "muthafucka" comes out of nowhere.
Posted by: Neo at April 16, 2005 10:12 AM
i played around with your idea
and created what might be the first remix of
the explicit-only album.

brilliant!
Posted by: Anonymous at April 17, 2005 11:11 AM
Bastardizing a landmark work of music for a joke is just sad in my opinion. I fail to see the point. Anyone who thinks this is great, fine... but make sure you have heard the entire album as it was originally intended. If you just like to hear curse words for a giggle, the suggestion to download some George Carlin is probably more your thing.

J-Zone's Edit These off A Job Ain't Nuthin But Work
He pulls off an "odd-maid style" 'reverse the curse' where he goes and fucks with a verse of his own rhymes, bleeping over the noncurses so they shine through. Hilarious and brilliant, so he beat you to it...
Posted by: ninjabong at April 18, 2005 10:23 AM
Great idea! I was inspired to have a bit of fun taking all of these tracks and combining them into one track to present the entire album of superlatives as one song. 42 seconds total:

Denis Leary would say: "Well, i think i smell a law suit in that one, what do you think?"
Still it's great and i know a few conservatives/republicans who'd really enjoy the explicit only version! ;-)
Can't wait for the full album!
Posted by: Baby Grandpa at April 18, 2005 04:24 PM
this is gold. i want the whole album so i can bump it in my ride.
Posted by: Anonymous at April 18, 2005 07:24 PM
I think it's hilarious!
Keep it up!
Mash-Ups have been done all over the place and we still dig 'em, so why not keep doing what you like doing?
The important thing is that it makes us think about how often certain words are relied on in a song like that.
In my 'hood, it sounds like the perfect drive mix for the young, white and snotty wanna-be gangsters.
They seem to love to play stuff like this really loud when we are all stuck in traffic lights.
Posted by: Chardman at April 18, 2005 07:27 PM
what a pointless fucking waste of time
Posted by: mune at April 18, 2005 07:31 PM
great idea, and well done.
I would take off the posting off the whole song, that's what will get you in trouble more likely than a remix for non-commercial use.
Hey...the edit is short enough to be a ringtone. Anyone know how to do that?
Posted by: michael dean at April 18, 2005 08:14 PM
omg that was one of the best things I've heard in a long time. massive props.
Posted by: mike s at April 18, 2005 08:15 PM
this is the greatest thing ever. in all of history. the lightbulb pales in comparison to your 19.4 second versin of straight outa compton. i am in awe. why i didnt think of this first is beyond me. brilliant. absolutley brilliant.

Eric Cartman. I'm imagining the edited version done by Eric Cartman.
Posted by: doktah foo at April 20, 2005 12:25 AM
Hilarious.
Definitely keep playing with it, I think there's actually a lot that could be done. Oh, I am muchly amused.

Posted by: Anonymous at April 20, 2005 07:32 AM
I like the idea of using instrumentals and putting the explicit lyrics over it. Besides, if you've listened to a lot of NWA, apart from the drop ins and scratches, a lot of it is very simple and repetative. Use a few hours in your audio editor of choice cutting it up and youd have the instrumentals in no time

Lol I HAD AN INSTRUMENTAL on my computer its not hard to find its called limewire lol

Hey If you study my logs, I’ve been getting random requests from Googlebot, It’s always in the root or in relevant subdirectories (usually /blog and forum or similar). All of these sites are with Word Press, and I can promise there is no mention of or links or anywhere. This means Googlebot is guessing that these files will be there. Now I’ve come to expect random flailing for syndication files from Feedster and Kinja, but Google? Et tu, Googlebot? Google pr updation is neer by in this month, so get your way……..

There's something to be done with jeniffer lopez it. Another point Phil made in an entry r9 - something to the effect of that when _ a band splits / diverges into solo albums maiden (and, I would add, side projects / splinter order prins groups), the results are rarely as satisfying, buy baltimore oriole online whether or not you (as the listener) micheal vick online are expecting the same music. I find puppets that to be true. Another thing that _ seems related to me: when the focus georges lucas of a band is several different songwriters order bridgette moynahan writing their own material and alternately buy megadeth online using the rest of the band as back-up romario or as session musicians (and even more buy prinz noticeably when a band has initially _ been more of the collabourative, holistic brooke shield bent), the music is seldom as good. order nichole kidman Examples I can think of immediately: buy milene online
