100 middle fingers....

New media artist chris Sugrue has remixed a track from the NWA Explicit Content Only album with 100 images of middle fingers. I love it.
In other Explicit Content Only news, I just got an angry email from my hosting company saying I crashed their shared server with all of the .mp3 files I'm "serving up" (their words). I've only crashed a hosting company's shared server one other time, so I think I'll take myself out for ice cream tonight.

touch up "artists"...

I took these photographs from http://homepage.mac.com/gapodaca/digital/bikini/index.html
Using a differencing algorithm you can see the kind of choices these "artists" are using to re-define what a woman should look like. The intent is for the resulting image to look as deformed and grotesque as the act of alteration. I would like to do a larger series of these kind of images so if anyone knows of good model photo touch up "artist" websites please post them in the comments.

del.icio.us visualization...

I made a data visualization of my del.icio.us site. Keywords are scaled based on how frequently I use them.
***UPDATE***
scrap this idea... mark has informed me that this has already been done. damn. Check out extispicious, pretty cool!

a href = WINDOW...

This was a simple idea I couldn't resist trying. The mouse arrow is projected on a building and the windows become buttons (complete with ROLL OVER functionality)..... yes I'm a geek.

Digital Projection Test...

Friday night I did some more digital projection tests. These videos don't do justice to how fun it was to see this stuff projected 6 stories high, but if you squint your eyes and use your imagination you can start to get an idea of what it looked like.
launch JESUS SAVES projection test
Big thanks to FONG and LEGAL OBSERVER (aka the Notorious I.N.G.) for putting in a lot of time and effort to take this footage. And, as always, thanks to HELL and JESUS SAVES.... hope you like it!
I am hoping to meet with a couple more writers and finally figure out how to project from a moving vehicle in the next 10 days..... stay tuned.
*religious disclaimer:
HELL and JESUS_SAVES are two of my favorite graffiti writers in NYC. Their inclusion in the graffiti analysis studies has little to do with what their tags spell, but more to do with where and how often their tags appear in the city. It is only a coincidence that their names seem to have a common religious theme.

FUEL LIVES MOTHERFUCKER...

This is why I love graffiti. I saw this one yesterday at a McDonald's drive through on 4th Ave. in Brooklyn. I've heard it said many times before, but LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.

HELL: still vs. motion study...

I did a quick study with HELL's tag where on the left side of the screen the hand is still and the ink is in motion, and on the right side of the screen the hand moves and the ink is still.

323...

323 is another one of my favorites. He has as many tags running as anyone I can think of, and is a true master of drip control. He also has one of the few tags in which the characters are not connected which allows him to change it up to fit best into the environment. Below are a few examples I shot yesterday. I would love to get him involved in my Graffiti Analysis studies, if anyone has any idea of how I can get in contact with him please shoot me an email (evan[at]ni9e.com).

more remixes....
Drew left a fun Explicit Content Only remix in the comments:
"Great idea! I was inspired to have a bit of fun taking all of these tracks and combining them into one track to present the entire album of superlatives as one song. 42 seconds total:

Animated JESUS SAVES...

This is an animation where every odd frame is a photograph of a JESUS SAVES tag from NYC, and every even frame is video documentation of him writing. It is still a work in progress as I need to take more photos, but the basic idea is there. (It may take a little while to load...)

JESUS SAVES....

I had the honor of meeting with one of the most prolific graffiti writers in all of New York City, JESUS SAVES. If you live here and have not seen his tag than you are not paying attention. It was a thrill to have him involved in my graffiti analysis studies, and to hear his outlook on graffiti and life. Huge thanks to JESUS SAVES for being so open and giving with his time and creativity.

This is a screen capture of JESUS SAVES's tag as visualized in the Graffiti Analysis application.

These are sketches he made during our conversation. (I thought it was fitting that the page was from the bibliography of my thesis document.)

Straight Outta Compton....
Thanks for everyones input on this project, I just finished it today. The entire Straight Outta Compton album edited down to only the explicit content:
http://ni9e.com.
If you enjoy it you should also check out commenter Cory D's response with the entire Chronic Album... very cool.

Explicit Content Only update....
Let me just say that I LOVE THE INTERNET. I haven't even finished my "Explicit Content Only" version of Straight Outta Compton and already someone has remixed it. "Teeth" left this comment in the original post:
"i played around with your idea and created what might be the first remix of the explicit-only album."
straight_outta_compton_teeth_rmx.mp3
Thanks Teeth, I love it.
Thanks everyone for all the comments, I'm glad people are digging it. I'm working on finishing it right now. Here is one more track:
Gangsta Gangsta edits down to 27 seconds of expicit material which gives it an 8% explicit content index.

HELL vs. FI5E

I had the pleasure of meeting with one of my favorite NYC writers HELL a few weeks ago. He is taking part in my graffiti analysis project and is the first writer I have captured into my application. The project is still very much a work in progress and I won't be posting this to my main site until it is further developed, but I thought I would give anyone checking this blog a sneak peak to what I've been up to. Click here to view an outdoor projection test of HELL's tag as run through my system. Below is a screen capture from the application.

I wanted to say a big thanks to HELL for going out on a limb and meeting with a stranger during a time which I know is very risky for graffiti writers.
I'm really excited to be meeting with some other amazing writers this week, so stay tuned for more.

Geek Graffiti notes...
I found some photos online from my presentation. I have NONE, so if anyone has more please post them in the comments. Thanks.
I got some requests to put up a notes page so here is a list of URLs from my presentation. I had a great time, thanks again to FITC, michele and my family for coming, everyone who listened to me blab for an hour, and everyone I had the pleasure of meeting.
VIVA TORONTO!

surveillance in Toronoto...

(seen walking around Toronto)
Even though a large surveillance camera is no more or less invasive than a small one, there is something particularly menacing about a huge security camera.

update from FITC...
I'm in Toronto for the FITC Design and Technology Festival. I gave my "Geek Graffiti" talk yesterday which went relatively well. As soon as I started talking about using cracked software, however, the digital projector decided to totally flip out. After a few minutes things were fixed and people seemed to enjoy things for the most part. All City Council and Postal Labels Against Bush continued to be crowd favorites, but afterwards I got several requests to see the Graffiti Analysis performances. I still haven't decided if I want to announce these, but if there continues to be interest it couldn't hurt to announce one or two here and there. I think for the most part people should happen upon these projections by chance; the same way graffiti is typically viewed.
The Copyright Panel I was a part of I would have done differently. It ended up being an informative discussion of the specifics of the law rather than a debate about the rights and wrongs of legislation that limits freedom of speech. I did sneak in playing a track off the Grey Album and showed some Cory Arcangel projects, so I was happy about that.
Highlights so far have been a Processing workshop with Ben Fry and Casey Reas, and hearing David Carson speak. More to come later....

Cory Arcangel Animated Desktop....

(*picture this animated as above)
Cory Arcangel is one of my favorite new media artists, and I'm all happy because I just figured out how to make the coolest desktop EVER with on of his pieces. The image above is an animated .gif from his piece called Mario Clouds. If you right click and save the image to your CPU you can set animated .gif files as your computers desktop. This means that you can enjoy Cory's animated Mario Clouds floating under your files all day long.....
In other Cory news there is also really good 2 cam video documentation of a talk he did at columbia which you can stream in here.

Fuck The Police....
'Fuck tha Police' edits down to 42.6 seconds after all the non-explicit material is edited out. This gives it a 12.3% explicit content index (much higher than 'Straight Outta Compton' at 7.4%).
Take a listen here.
