risk9....

Lately I have been doing some research for a book I am working on which has been keeping me out in the heat for the last few weeks. One of my favorites from the walking I've done in the East Village is RISK9.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah...
Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah played last night to a large and receptive crowd at the South Street Sea Port. They sounded great, and one person in particular was feeling them deep down in his soul. Lady fi5e thought he should star in the first music video for the band. I agreed, here it is.

This woman drew the show.

final projection run for 2005...

This is footage from a projection run I did a couple of weeks ago (along with a new application I was testing out). I'm sad to say this will be the last of the projections I will be doing in New York until later this winter. On the flip side, if anyone in Brussels has a really bright digital projector I will be your new best friend?! Huge thanks go out as always to HELL, JESUS SAVES, AVONE, and KATSU, hopefully we can pick up where we left off when I return. Thanks to Lady fi5e and GARB for help with this last run. And finally, big huge 2 story tall thanks go out Dave and the Parsons DT department for letting me borrow the digital projector (I'm surprised it is still in one piece).

P.S., that was GARB's handywork in the "Thanks Dave" video.

Deitch reactions...
I'm really late to the party on this one, but I finally got around to seeing the SWOON and Barry McGee shows currently at the Deitch galleries in SOHO. Photos of the shows can be seen here on flickr.
I will start by saying that I love SWOON... I tried to player hate her for a while but it didn't work out... she is dope. That being said, for me her work lost much of it's meaning in the gallery. This is not a cut on the installation, but rather a testament to how powerful it is come upon one of her pieces in the streets. I'm not sure what her work has gained by moving indoors.
The Barry McGee show made me uncomfortable for other reasons, mainly because my favorite part of it was looking at tags by other people. And while this might have made sense if the show was in Iowa, in SOHO I don't know why I wouldn't just step outside and see all of this in its natural environment; where the graffiti is "real". Putting graffiti in a gallery is always tricky business, and again, in this case I don't know what is gained.
I don't mean to be a pessimist, I had a great time at both shows and am happy that they are there. Mainly I am happy because the more the general public starts to see graffiti as something more than vandalism then maybe we will start to see people doing less jail time. The Deitch shows for me are bitter sweet because even though SWOON and McGee are currently the toast of the town, and COPE is doing his billboard for TIME magazine, the New York Times reported last week that "Graffiti arrests are up 88.9 percent citywide since January" due to increased funding for the NYPD city wide vandal squad. So while the art and advertising worlds (not to mention video games and movies) are in love with graffiti at the moment, there are a lot of people in jail right now for writing their names in the city.
Both shows end this saturday, so if you haven't seen them yet be sure to check them out. I'd love to hear other peoples reactions to these shows (or to my ranting), please leave comments if you have them.

die hipster....

I don't really wish death upon the hipsters, but this did make me smile.
On a related note, yesterday Dave told me that the first rule of being a hipster is denying that you are a hipster... what a head fuck.

drips...

This is one of my favorite tags right now. It's all drip and intelligently takes advantage of curves and smooth painted metal surfaces. The rumor is that these are the work of KR (which seems to fit his ink and line style), but I'm not completely sure of this. Either way it's great to see people innovating in ink.

ni9e.com tricks...
Here are a couple nerdy tricks you can do with the ni9e.com site.
If you put 'ni9e' into google the first result reads "all you see is..." as the link, and "...crime in the source code" as the description (if you don't get it check out style wars).
If you go to ni9e.com and do a "view source" you can see an ASCII fi5e tag dripping in number '5's....... word.

Street Art Blows....

Lady fi5e and I came across this sticker last weekend in SOHO stuck on top of someones "street art" piece stating "Keep your art to yourself next time." I was already happy enough about this, but after visiting the URL at the bottom of the sticker this person has become my new hero. The site, streetartblows.com, opens up to a full screen middle finger pointed at the hub of the street art movement on Wooster and Grand in Manhattan..... nice. The text on the site is well written and expresses an important point of view that isn't heard enough.

"Street art blows. That’s basically what it comes down to. It’s sad because as a medium it has so many possibilities, and while everyone is doing it, almost no one is doing it well. What’s more, no one is calling the shit brown. Instead, everyone is getting in magazines with half-baked ideas that have been half-baking for about half a month. Going out one weekend with some wheat paste and your digi-cam doesn’t make you a street artist. Posting it on your blog Monday morning doesn’t make you any good. We need to stop telling kids that what they do is good if it isn’t.
We have to start asking questions and stop accepting everything on the walls as good. We need to ask ourselves why it is important that this is outdoors? Would this be any good if it weren’t? Why does it matter that this is done where and how it was? How is this new and, most importantly, why should I care?"
I typically hold the view that graffiti (and street art) is not an exclusionary practice. Meaning, unlike magazines, websites, books, and art galleries, there is no curatorial process on the streets; nobody saying "you are good so you can join", or "you don't belong here". That being said, I completely agree with the author in that if we celebrate crap we become a movement based on feces. It is time to start expecting more than cute illustrations and cleaver puns from a medium whose roots stem from dissent and revolution. I'm really glad that this site exists and I hope to see more "Keep Your Art To Yourself" stickers in the future..... hopefully not on any of my stuff.

Computer Vision...
Golan Levin has published a paper called Computer Vision for Artists and Designers: Pedagogic Tools and Techniques for Novice Programmers... I'm a fucking geek so I'm really excited about it. If you haven't seen golan's work clear your schedule and spend the rest of the day on his site.
I found this article on an axcellent new media blog I have been checking lately at http://www.generatorx.no/.
