China Channel initially popular in...... China?!

As a tool designed to simulate the internet browsing experience in China I'm a bit confused why China Channel would be so popular in China. Also surprising that the URL has not been black listed yet.

China Channel

Experience the censored Chinese internet at home!

The Firefox add-on China Channel offers internet users outside of China the ability to surf the web as if they were inside mainland China. Take an unforgetable virtual trip to China and experience the technical expertise of the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry (supported by western companies). It’s open source, free and easy.

Banksy's For $ale in Hong Kong Markets...

I came across this hand painted Banksy stencil while walking around the Temple Street night market 2 days ago (someone seriously needs to teach the painting factories about how to make a stencil).

This is the first time I have seen a non-Chinese living artist for sale in the counterfeit painting markets; a possible metric for making the argument that Banksy is the most famous living artist.

Canvas cost negotiations started at $250 HKD ($32 USD). Michele offered him $50HKD to which he assured us that he can sell as many Banksy's as he can get his hands on. In the end we took our $50HKD around the corner and bought a 4 pack of San Miguel.

Akay Killing It

I've enjoyed Akay's work in the past, but his new projects are some of the best outdoor stuff I have seen in a long long time.

ni9e.com now evan-roth.com

The rumors are true.... ni9e.com is now evan-roth.com. For various reasons I have decided to leave behind the URL I registered almost 8 years ago for something a bit less creative and more self aggrandizing. Those of you nostalgic for what once was can always take a trip down memory lane and still enter the site through ni9e.com for old times sake. I'm going to keep the blog URL at blog.ni9e.com as a terrorist fist bump to the place where it all started. All of your old bookmarks (both social and otherwise) should still work. Management would like to thank you for your continued support through this time of corporate restructuring. And now for 9 line breaks of silence for an old friend:

(Thanks to Jamie-Dubs for the .htaccess voodoo.)

Opening Tomorrow In Hong Kong...

Tomorrow evening Videotage, here in Hong Kong, will be premiering a new installation (titled: Web 2.0) and Fire Fox Plugin (titled: China Channel) by myself and Aram (in collaboration with Tobi, Michael, and Jamie).

Venue info here:
Exhibition: October Contemporary 2008 – SECOND LIFE
Opening: Oct 4 (Sat), 7-11pm
Exhibition Period: Oct 6 (Mon) to Nov 4 (Tue), 12nn-7pm
Address:
Unit 13, Cattle Depot Artist Village
63 Ma Tau Kok Road
To Kwa Wan, Kowloon
Hong Kong

Project description and images below. Project page coming soon.

Web 2.0 is a gallery installation consisting of two internet enabled computers, a hacked mouse and keyboard, and a custom plugin for the popular (and free) Fire Fox web browser. Two computers are connected to a single keyboard and mouse allowing visitors to control both identical machines at the same time while using just a single input device. The only difference between the two internet terminals is their network connection; one machine is connected to the less restricted internet in Hong Kong, while the other is connected to the internet through a connection point in the mainland of China.

The Golden Shield Project (sometimes referred to as the the Great Fire Wall of China), censors content primarily by blocking IP addresses. The Internet police in China is estimated to contain over 30,000 workers, and is responsible for blocking content such as Tibetan independence, Taiwan independence, police brutality, the Tienanmen Square protests of 1989, freedom of speech, democracy, religion, and some international news.

The browser plugin used in the Web 2.0 installation will soon be available for public download on the web. Unlike many tools which enable Chinese people to freely surf the web via connections to computers outside of China, this plugin routes all internet traffic to computers on the inside of the Chinese firewall, allowing web surfers to experience an Internet identical to that of Chinese.

TSA Communication progress...

I wanted to thank all of the people that have been emailing me with good ideas for things to cut into metal plates, and with offers of access to X-Ray machines. I will be making more updates on the TSA Communication project here and on evan-roth.com in the coming days and weeks.

The comment threads on many of these posts make for interesting reading, thanks to everyone for the great conversations:
- MAKE BLOG comments
- BOING-BOING comments
- GIZMODO comments

Paul, from Network World, has published some of our email conversations related to the project at this URL. Thanks also to his brother (airport security expert) who responded with reactions.
